Facebook ChatBack app - Press Release

May 10, 2008

Would you like to communicate more with your Facebook family and friends? Or may be find/meet new friends? Today we’re launching the Google Talk Chatback application for Facebook.

Facebook and Google users can now communicate and chat live with each other via the newest Facebook Chatback application.

Chatback is the newest feature from Google Talk.

Google calls it “chatback” because instead of you doing all the talking on your blog, your visitors can talk back to you. Sure, they could leave comments, but those are public and hard to use for a real conversation. With chatback, it’s a real instant message session.

Facebook Chatback connects the Google chatback to your Facebook profile.

How does it work?
A visitor is browsing your Facebook and wants to chat with you. He/she hits the chat button and can start chatting without the hassle of installing any program. You will receive at the same time a message in your Google account that someone wants to chat with you. You click accept and start chatting.

It is a new way for facebook users to communicate with you in real-time. Users also do not have to worry about any additional installation or set up. We hope Facebook Chat will make it easier to connect instantly.

How to install?
The installation is the same like any Facebook application. Just log in to your Facebook account and click here: http://apps.facebook.com/chatback/
You can find also a step by step guide with screen shots given by the developers.

19+1 Tips to increase your Alexa Rank

May 4, 2008

Alexa Rank

How to Rank high in Alexa

This article is a collection of methods you can use to boost your Alexa Rank. Most of these tips are derived from several fellow webmasters I know who claimed to have derived positive results through their experiments with the Alexa Rankings. Some of the other tips came from articles and other sources.

Do these tips work? According to some, yes they definitely do work. However, do note that most of them require active effort of some sort and so, they will work as long as long as you are consistently performing specific actions.

To increase your Alexa rank in the long run, I would highly recommended that one focus on developing quality content which attracts and maintains a large audience instead of purely focusing on artificially increasing your Alexa Rank.

Great link-worthy content will lead to a natural increase in site traffic and is an excellent way to passively increase your Alexa rank.

It is important that you should devote most of your efforts in growing your site audience alongside integrated implementation of any of the following tips below.

Alexa Rank focuses on the amount of traffic that a domain gets. The Alexa ranking is from high to low. The lower your number is, the better. So if you want to rank nr. 1 at Alexa you need to have massive traffic and be very popular.

Increase your alexa ranking

What does Alexa measure?

Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling 3 month period. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and page views. Reach is decided by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single page view. The site with the highest combination of users and page views is ranked #1.

Alexa’s traffic rankings are for top level domains only (e.g. domain.com). We do not provide separate rankings for sub pages within a domain (e.g. www.domain.com/subpage.html) or sub domains (e.g. sub domain.domain.comunless unless we can automatically identify them as personal home pages or blogs, like those hosted on Geocities and Tripod. If a site is identified as a personal home page or blog, its traffic ranking will have an asterisk (*) next to it: Personal Page Avg. Traffic Rank: 3,456*. Personal pages are ranked on the same scale as a regular domain, so a personal page ranked 3,456* is the 3,456th most popular page among Alexa users.

19 Tips to increase your Alexa Rank

1. Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your website or blog as your homepage. This is the most basic step.

2. Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. I did this a few days ago and receive a fair amount of clicks every day. According to some, each click counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor.

3. Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers. Be sure to link to Alexa’s full explanation of their toolbar and tracking system so your readers know what installing the toolbar or extension does. The Alexa toolbar is also excellent for your online research!

Alexa Rank

Alexa Features:

  • Related Links: Find sites that are similar to the one you are currently visiting.
  • Traffic Trend: A sparkline showing the traffic trend from the last four months.
  • Reach Meter: A neat little indicator that shows the site’s Reach.
  • Traffic Rank: Shows the current site’s Alexa Traffic Rank.

4. Work in an Office or own a company? Get the Alexa toolbar or SS Firefox extension installed on all computers and set your website as the homepage for all browsers. Perhaps it will be useful to note that this may work only when dynamic or different IPs are used.

5. Get friends to review and rate your Alexa website profile. Not entirely sure of its impact on rankings but it might assist in some way.

6. Write or Blog about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll link to you and send you targeted traffic (i.e. Visitors with the toolbar already installed). This gradually has effects on your Alexa ranking.

7. Flaunt your URL in webmaster forums. Webmasters usually have the toolbar installed. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and offer useful feedback. It’s also a good way to give back to the community if you have useful articles to share with others.

8. Write content that is related to webmasters. This can fall in the group of domains and SEO, two fields in which most webmasters will have the Alexa toolbar installed. Promote your content on social networking websites and webmaster forums.

9. Use Alexa redirects on your website URL. Try this: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.barcelona-webdesign.com. Replace www.barcelona-webdesign.com with the URL for your website. Leave this redirected URL in blog comments as well as forum signatures. This redirect will count a unique IP address once a day so clicking it multiple times won’t help. There is no official proof that redirects positively benefit your Alexa Rank, so use with caution.

10. Post in Asian social networking websites or forums. Some webmasters have suggested that East Asian web users are big Alexa toolbar fans, judging by the presence of several Asia-based websites in the Alexa Top 500. I suggest trying this only if you have the time or capacity to do so.

11. Create a webmaster tools section on your website. This is a magnet for webmasters who will often revisit your website to gain access to the tools. Aaron Wall’s web page on SEOTools is a very good example.

12. Get Dugg or Stumbled. This usually brings massive numbers of visitors to your website and the sheer amount will have a positive impact on your Alexa Rank. Naturally, you’ll need to develop link worthy material.

13. Use PayperClick Campaigns. Buying advertisements on search engines such as Google or Exact Seek will help bring in Traffic. Doubly useful when your ad is highly relevant to webmasters. Ask an expert to set up because this can save you money and avoid trouble. If not set up correctly Google and Exact Seek will burn down your budget in no-time.

14. Create an Alexa category on your blog and use it to include any articles or news about Alexa. This acts as an easily accessible resource for webmasters or casual search visitors while assisting you rank in the search engines.

15. Optimize your popular posts. Got a popular post that consistently receives traffic from the search engines? Include a widget/graph at the bottom of the post, link to your Alexa post or use Alexa redirection on your internal URLs.

16. Buy banners and links for traffic from webmaster forums and websites. A prominent and well displayed ad will drive lots of webmaster traffic to your website, which can significantly boost your rank.

17. Hire forum posters to pimp for your website. Either buy signatures in webmaster forums or promote specific articles or material in your website on a regular basis . You can easily find posters for hire in Digital Point and other webmaster forums.

18. Pay Cybercafe owners to install the Alexa toolbar and set your website as the homepage for all their computers. This might be difficult to arrange and isn’t really a viable solution for most. I’m keeping this one in because some have suggested that it does work.

19. Use s . This is a little shady so I don’t recommend it unless you’re really interested in artificially inflating your Alexa Rank. Use visually attractive pictures or banners and link them to your redirected Alexa URL. This will be most effective if your website has content that is actually relevant to the MySpace Crowd.

20. Try Alexa auto-surfs. Do they work? May be for brand new sites. I think they are mostly suitable for new websites with a very poor Alexa rank. Note that there can be problems when you try to use auto surfs alongside contextual ads like Adsense. They aren’t also long term solutions to improving your Alexa Rank so I suggest using with caution.

These are my 19+1 Alexa tips.

Google chatback app

April 24, 2008

Chatback

Recently Google launched “chatback
a new feature to Gtalk.

You can add this application to any website or blog.
The advantage is that your visitors can see if you are online and chat real-time with you.

Google chatback badge
A Google Talk chatback badge will let visitors to your website chat with you. They will be able to chat with you whenever you’re signed in to Google Talk as your-email@gmail.com.

You can use badges with different settings on different web pages. For example, you can share your status message on your personal blog and not on your public blog.

Don’t let your visitors click to your competition but help them with their questions.

If you need any technical support with implementing this?

Try the Chatback below.

Google Quality Raters report leaked

April 20, 2008

goo0gle

A forty five page, up-to-date Google report has been leaked. It provides updated guidelines for Google’s Quality Raters.

Section four of the report, starting on page 32, discusses “spam”. Google says these are pages designed by webmasters to trick search engine robots and direct traffic to their websites.

Pages generally should NOT be marked Spam if they provide added value. Examples of content that provides added value include:

- Price comparison functionality.
- Product reviews.
- Recipes.
- Lyrics and quotes.
- Contact information, especially physical addresses and phone numbers.
- Coupon, discount and promotion codes.

The document can be found here

http://www.barcelona-webdesing.com/downloads/quality-rater-guidelines.pdf

The most interesting part starts at page 32.

Google gives several pages of examples of what it regards as Webspam. They include fake message boards, fake blogs, fake directories, parked domains, sneaky redirects, keyword stuffing, hidden text, and hidden links. Google explains how to switch off Javascript to see if it is being used to hide text. Horizontal lines or bars can also hide text. Google also knows that CSS can be used hide text.

Spam can also involve scraped content from such sources as Wikipedia, DMOZ and RSS news feeds, combined with PPC ads.

“The important thing to remember,” Google says, “is that if the scraped (copied) content is removed and all that remains is ads, it is Spam.”

Fortunately, if you’re sensible enough to be providing useful, original content, your pages should be regarded as OK.

Are you wondering if any of your pages qualify as “Webspam”? Here’s the test…

“If I remove the copied content, scraped news feeds, fake forums and blogs, thin affiliate links, parked/expired domain links, and all that is left are PPC ads and sponsored links, the page is probably spam.”

good luck!
